- [Chicagoland Giving Machine Fundraiser](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/chicagoland-giving-machine-fundraiser/): Little Friends is excited to be once again a part of the Chicagoland Giving Machine fundraiser at Fox Valley Mall. This charitable vending machine is located at Door 2/Southeast mall entrance from November 22-December 3. Rather than buying candy or snacks for oneself, this vending machine allows people to purchase an item for others in our community.
- [Connecting Adults With Communities Participant Spotlight](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/connecting-adults-with-communities-participant-spotlight/): The fall cohort of the Little Friends Connecting Adults with Communities (CAC) program concluded in November, featuring eight young adults. This program aims to bridge the gap between post-secondary neurodiverse adults and competitive integrated employment in underrepresented sectors such as technology, data analysis, logistics, manufacturing, and more. Through experiential learning, the program fosters confidence and independence. The primary goal of CAC is to prepare each participant for competitive employment through individualized assessments, extensive career exploration, and skills development, culminating in on-the-job training. Throughout this developmental journey, young adults acquire the necessary skills to secure and maintain meaningful employment within their communities. One notable participant, Owen, has been thriving in his role as a Data Analyst and Office Associate at Valley Insurance Group since he started in September. In his position, Owen is responsible for analyzing data and creating presentations for customers, while also assisting with clerical tasks within the office. He enjoys collaborating with his new co-workers and appreciates having a consistent schedule. Owen participated in Little Friends’ pilot cohort of the Connecting Adults with Communities program in the spring of 2024. After completing the 12-week skills development program, he regularly attended office hours to ensure he found a fulfilling career. Owen said, “CAC gave me the confidence boost I needed for the job search process. Before Cassidy and Anthony came along, I spent the first 2-3 months of this year hitting dead ends in job searching.”  He shared that he would “100%” recommend CAC to other young adults and added, “I don’t know where I would be today without it.”

- [Family Respite Program a Welcomed Resource](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/family-respite-program-a-welcomed-resource/): Little Friends Family Respite Services offers weekly supervised care for children with disabilities and their siblings. This program provides caregivers with some time off from the challenges of raising a child with disabilities while ensuring that their children are in a safe and enjoyable environment. "We are so grateful for the family respite program. It provides a safe, trustworthy environment for our child that our child looks forward to going to each week. It is so wonderful to have an environment with staff that can understand our child’s disability and support needs.," shared one of the families we serve. A recent participant survey revealed that 100% of caregivers reported decreased anxiety and increased personal time, all thanks to the program. Currently, the respite program is free for families, thanks to generous funding. At this time, our team is serving 53 children across three different days of programming. Each session, held at our Warrenville campus, is led by an instructor, paid staff members, and community volunteers. All participants are encouraged to take part in structured activities, art projects, and gross and fine motor play, as well as to socialize. We are inclusive and welcome children with a range of disability types, as well as their siblings. Our Fall session is currently underway and runs through the end of October, with the Holiday session beginning November 6. For more information, please visit our Respite page. 
- [Connecting Families and Caregivers](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/connecting-families-and-caregivers/): Now, more than ever, families of those with autism and other developmental disabilities are seeking support, direction, and guidance. Little Friends has recognized this need by focusing on the families and caregivers in our community with our Family Support Network. Little Friends Family Support Network provides families with socialization opportunities and offers the information, resources, and support needed to make informed choices for their loved ones. The mission of the Family Support Network is to connect Little Friends families and friends of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities at various stages of life's journey. We want to invite parents and caregivers to join us as we strive to connect families through a series of informational and social events planned for the 2024-25 year. Our inaugural Caregiver Social event is scheduled for Friday, August 9, from 6-8 p.m. and will be hosted at our Adult Services Building at 27545 Diehl Rd. This adult-only gathering will include a light dinner, allowing parents and caregivers to meet, share, and learn from one another. For any inquiries, please reach out to Pat Loy.
- [Committed to the Growth of our Staff](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/supporting-the-growth-of-our-staff/): This spring, the first group of eight staff members from our educational program began pursuing their Learning Behavior Specialist degrees, with tuition assistance provided by Little Friends. “As a first-generation college graduate who grew up in foster care, I did not think I would have an opportunity like this,” said participant Victoria Jackson. “I am grateful to be a part of the cohort and cannot wait to see where it takes me in the future.” This program, in partnership with Southern Illinois University, enables paraprofessionals and teacher assistants in our programs to pursue their degrees online, fulfilling all clinical requirements at Little Friends. As a result of this initiative, our staff will welcome one LBS1-certified teacher this fall and seven more in the summer of 2026. To further our mission of serving more students with special needs in our educational programs, we aim to add a new group of staff members to the cohort each summer semester. Our agency is dedicated to providing an annual scholarship for each participant per academic year as we continue this investment in our staff. “We are excited about our first tuition assistance program for future LBS1 professionals. This initiative underscores our deep commitment to our employees and their professional growth,” stated Little Friends Vice President of Human Resources Liz Johnson.  “We are incredibly grateful for our dedicated team members who are passionate about supporting our students. Their hard work, commitment to professional development, and unwavering support for their peers make them truly exceptional.”

As the first session of CAC comes to an end, our team has seen an increase in the self-confidence and self-advocacy skills of the program participants. This has been achieved through experiential learning, guest speakers, community outings, and even virtual reality, which have helped the participants learn more about themselves and future employment opportunities. Upon completing the session, one participant said, “I didn’t expect to learn so much information about myself, but I’m glad I did!”

- [Adults](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/adults/): In 1968, while Little Friends school was in its third year, another group of volunteers organized the Naperville Sheltered Workshop, one of the first area organizations to provide vocational activities for adults with developmental disabilities. The two groups merged in 1970 and in 1976 changed its name to Little Friends, Inc.

- [Children](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/children/): In 1965, Dottee Krejci met with a group of parents whose children with special challenges the public school system could not serve. She understood the need for their children to be accepted, included, and reach their fullest potential. Dottee volunteered to start a program to serve this group of children. During the brainstorming for the agency name, a mother suggested the endearing nickname that she called her son her "little friend."

- [Untitled, Ceramic Vase 2](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/product/untitled-ceramic-vase-2/): This large and organically shaped vase is a stand-alone art piece or to be wonderfully accompanied by a floral arrangement.  This piece was layered with multiple types of glazes creating this amazing mixed color effect. The Artist - Dan’s motto when working on art is to “GO BIG OR GO HOME”, creating larger scale works of art. Dan’s loves working with ceramics, often creating large handmade vases. His process of rolling coils, and building them up by hand, lends his works to take on unique and organic forms. Dan has recently begun painting, where he also enjoys working on larger scales. He enjoys using acrylic paints on canvas and wood surfaces. Dan’s works often feature abstract designs, landscapes and other scenery, as well as people and animals. Dan appreciates the process of learning and experimenting with different painting and glazing techniques. Dan’s unique color application of mixing and layering makes his works bold, vibrant, and one-of-a kind. Dan gets inspired by working alongside and learning from others, “I get inspiration from other artists, and enjoy collaborating with others to create artwork” states Dan. “Art gives me ideas; I get motivated through the process” states Dan.
- [Thomas](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/product/thomas/): Any little person would love this collection of the iconic train series to adorn their room. The Artist -  Dhanuka enjoys painting his favorite cartoon characters, with a very specific eye for detail. Some works include Arthur, Peanuts, Toy Story, Sonic and even Sponge Bob. He has recently tried his hand at poured paint projects, however he reports it is a bit messy. But Dhanuka’s interest does not stop there. He thoroughly enjoys movies and music with Batman, Fast and Furious along with Transformers being some of his favorites. As a trained pianist he can often be heard playing the theme songs to these movies and more. Recently Dhanuka has taken up playing the guitar. His talents are also at singing and arranging music.

Proudly display this beautifully textured landscape in your home or office for inspiration. The Artist - Spencer is quiet, and quite serious about his work. He typically enjoy sketching artwork but since joining the studio he has found painting to be quite enjoyable. His strong brush strokes often gives his pieces movement. He is interested in the style of the great art masters such as van Gough and Monet. He also enjoys the great classical composers such as Beethoven and Bach. Spencer is also trying his hand at playing the guitar and his family reports he is a natural born musician. Spencer has also been blessed with an amazing memory. His family says he is a wizard of math by memorizing over 10,000 times table calculations and loves to be challenged with a problem.

The Artist - Joy’s artwork is often very intricate involving detailed designs, using methodical art techniques to create her style of very technically skilled work. Joy works in a variety of mediums from Jewelry and accessory making to working with yarn, thread and wire.  Visually 3D aspects, and techniques of piecing together are a theme seen throughout Joys hobbies and artworks. “I like building Legos, working on jigsaw puzzles, and even building Ikea furniture, anything with instructions I can follow!” states Joy. Joy recently learned crocheting and has created stuffed animals, and assorted pouches. She likes making purses, wallets, and mandala designs made from both beads and yarn. Joy’s works often feature imagery close to her heart, such as her dog and Hello Kitty. Joy states, “I make art because it’s fun and keeps my hands busy, giving me something to do”.
- [Animals on Parade](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/product/animals-on-parade/): This piece was inspired by the mural at the north gate at The Brookfield Zoo. This artist captured the likeness beautifully. The Artist - Jackson is a highly skilled and talented artist who truly appreciates and learns from other artists, often researching and replicating their works, such as Disney animators. He also has a deep passion for music, as he is a singer and musician himself, he has drawn work inspired by NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. “I make art from what inspires my eye and things I see out in the world.” Taking walks and traveling often inspires Jackson to create what he sees and recreates some of his most treasured and childhood memories. Jackson creates images of his favorite animated characters, animals, movies, assorted logos designs, and buildings Jackson uses a multitude of mediums and techniques, from drawing and painting to repurposing recycled materials, such as taking cans, bottles, fry and pizza boxes, and transforming them into wonderful works of art. He also likes making miniatures out of repurposed objects and has recreated skyscrapers, houses, buildings, and bridges.

The Artist - Troy’s energetic spirit, love for music and color inspires the style of his artwork.  Troy enjoys listening to music while he creates, while often dancing and “rocking out”. Troy appreciates the art of “pour paintings”, where he uses colors to drip and pour on items like canvas, glass vases, and even a bowling ball.
- [The King](https://www.littlefriendsinc.org/product/the-king/): Love me Tender, Hound Dog, to Jailhouse Rock. No matter what your favorite song is, The King never disappoints. The artist captured her favorite singer on this canvas to share her love of all those memorable songs. The Artist - Joanne finds inspiration for her work almost everywhere, from newspaper clippings to her own dreams. Awake or asleep she is dreaming up ideas. “My brain’s always thinking of what to do next,” states Joanne. Her work often features images of crosses and other religious symbols, as she has a strong connection with her religion and attending church. Her enthusiasm for trying new ideas has often led her to create in a multitude of art mediums and subject matter. From hand beading, needlepointing, and sewing to constructing work from found objects, such as pennies, bowling balls, and old keys. She often creates work that is ornate in style. Her works are both intricate and bold. Often choosing shiny materials, from gold fabric to crystal beads, and subjects like the sun and Elvis, Joanne states, “I like things that shine.”

The Artist - Gail’s intricate work displays her dedication and passion as an artist. Her process usually involves long-term projects including detailed work such as cross-stitch, embroidery, sewing, collages, and drawings. Gail focuses on both technical and expressive ways of working. “I like to learn and grow artistically,” states Gail. “My artwork shows and expresses to others about who I am.” Gail’s work is often inspired by what she finds beautiful and interesting, such as nature, animals, trees, people, and the idea of a sense of community. Many of these images and ideas are found in her artwork, where she has drawn sketchbooks filled with contour drawings of people. She creates work that captures who she is and the way she relates to others. “I take pride in my artwork,” states Gail.

Denise finds inspiration from other artists’ work and enjoys using the website Pinterest to learn and discover different ideas. Some of her interests include flowers, animals, and sports, inspiring her choice of the subject matter in her work. Taking orders and earning an income from the sales of her work also drives Denise to create. “I enjoy selling my work, and showing it the customer,” states Denise.

Elba’s use of floral imagery is also seen in her accessory making, sewing work, drawings, and tissue paper crafting. Elba enjoys wearing and selling the accessories she makes from jewelry to hairpins. Celebrating holidays and people she cares for inspires Elba’s work. Gail focuses on both technical and expressive ways of working. “I like to learn and grow artistically,” states Gail. “My artwork shows and expresses to others about who I am.” Gail’s work is often inspired by what she finds beautiful and interesting, such as nature, animals, trees, people, and the idea of a sense of community. Many of these images and ideas are found in her artwork, where she has drawn sketchbooks filled with contour drawings of people. His process of rolling coils, and building them up by hand, lends his works to take on unique and organic forms. Dan has recently begun painting, where he also enjoys working on larger scales. He enjoys using acrylic paints on canvas and wood surfaces. Dan’s works often feature abstract designs, landscapes and other scenery, as well as people and animals. Dan appreciates the process of learning and experimenting with different painting and glazing techniques. Dan’s unique color application of mixing and layering makes his works bold, vibrant, and one-of-a kind. Dan gets inspired by working alongside and learning from others, “I get inspiration from other artists, and enjoy collaborating with others to create artwork” states Dan. “Art gives me ideas; I get motivated through the process” states Dan

The Artist - With headphones on, a CD player at his side, and a sharpie in hand, Ian’s colorful and detailed imagery displays his love for music. Ian’s iconic style is illustrated through sections of squares. Each square represents a certain song on the album he is listening to at that time. His artwork is often influenced by the TV show Glee, the movie Footloose, and from musicians like David Bowie, Paul McCartney, and Christian Rock.
