Little Friends Announces Summer Art Therapy Group: Flexible Thinking Through Art and Super Heroes!

Little Friends Center for Autism's Summer Art Therapy Group is designed for children 7 - 12 years of age. Participants must be able to sit for 45 minutes needing only occasional re-direction and not wander. Parents must stay on site and assist if needed. Dates: June 11 - July 23 from 9:15 - 10 a.m. or 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. (No group the week of July 4th.)

Cost: $285.00

Instructor: Jennifer Kotecki, M.A., LPC, obtained her Master's Degree in Clinical Counseling and Art Therapy from Adler University in Chicago. Jennifer works at Little Friends Center for Autism as a counselor, art therapist and ABA therapist. Jennifer has also led groups, taught in special education classrooms and is working as a handwriting specialist and currently certified through Handwriting Without Tears.

Class Schedule

June 11th - Session 1
Children will be introduced to flexible thinking and will make a social skills toolbox to house all of their social behaviors that they will learn over the next five weeks.

June 18th - Session 2
In this session, participants will learn how to use flexible thinking to defeat negative thoughts. Children will create their character that gets in the way of flexible thinking.

June 25th - Session 3
Children will learn to stop, look, listen and observe social situations. They will learn about their inside thoughts, make a self-collage and fill the inside with private words. On the outside, the children will fill in the space with what others may say about them.

July 9th - Session 4
Session four teaches participants about social rules that are not obvious and tips to help them. Children will decorate treasure boxes and fill them with golden paper that has tips on social skills written on them.

July 16th - Session 5
Children will learn how they can use their flexibility to help them when they feel stuck. They will also create their own superhero in this session.

July 23rd - Session 6
In our final session, participants will learn about using their own thoughts to motivate themselves to be their own superhero and use flexible thinking socially. Children will decorate their own baseball caps and load their tool boxes up to take them home.
